The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
