An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that night. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
